10th ANNIVERSARY BLACK HILLS FLOOD
On June 9, 1972, Rapid City, South Dakota suffered a nightmarish
flood that killed 237 people, totally destroyed 720 homes and severely
damaged 1AOO other dwellings. Total damage exceeded a half billion
dollars.
The citizens of Rapid City have come a long way in the past ten years
and have rebuilt their broken lives and property in this nationally famous
western city of 50,000 residents. Today, Rapid City is a model of what
can be done with the cooperation of all levels of local and state government,
the private sector, and federal disaster assistance.
On June 9, 1982, Rapid City will hold a memorial service as a tribute,
not only to those who died, but also to all those that didn't give up .. .
those who rebuilt our community. A fountain and permanent bronze
memorial plaque listing the deceased will be dedicated as part of the program.
The fountain and permanent memorial were constructed by the
students and faculty of the S. D. School of Mines and Technology in Rapid
City. Funds to construct the project were donated by the families of the
victims, members of the business community and other private citizens .
A tribute, not only to those
who died, but also to all those
who didn't give up ... those
who rebuilt our community.
