While the site contains documents from government and manuscript collections, the largest collection consists of photographs, which are made available through the “Preserving South Dakota in Photos” initiative. The initiative makes the photographic collections more accessible via the web, decreases handling of the original photographs, and improves the catalog records for each of the photos. The initiative is funded by donations and grants.
This project has been funded in part by grants from the City of Deadwood and the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office, and the National Park Service.
